Legitimacy (from Beetham perspective) must:

  • conform to established rules
  • be justifiable from people's beleifs
  • evidence of consent by subordinates

The US is by far the biggest contributor to the UN regular budget, and has withheld contributions in protest of decisions by UN agencies or the general assembly

Japan and Germany, the 3rd and 4th largest contributors, have no veto power as they were aggressors in 2nd world war

of 15 members of UN security council (UNSC) – deals with international peace and stability, 5 are permanent, other 10 represent respective region

resolutions need to be passed by 9 out of 15 members, with none of the permanent members using veto

Global governance: The network of global norms, rules and interactions formed by all the state and non-state actors and systems

Typically diffused, rather than a national government with a single leader (check table on p.66)

Constructivism: State behavior is shaped by the beliefs of the elite, collective norms, and social identities. Individuals (particularly elites) are mainly analyzed. Better at describing the past
