Ecuador under Correa's regime
Rafael Correa had appealed to the public in his presidential campaign (2007-2017) under the pretense of an idea “buen vivir socialism”. This initially led to increased social spending and decreased poverty.
Yet his actions as his term progressed contradicted those ideas, where initially he enacted some elements associated with a socialist society, he would eventually be found to be taking bribes while in office to extract oil, maintaining land, political power, and wealth with few.
For instance he started with political movements supporting indigenous movements in Ecuador, yet later drafted laws excluding indigenous communities from political conversation.
Critics argue that this administration eroded the state's government, with individual freedoms and liberties infringed. Democratic participation changed to disregard opinions of minority groups, and silencing the media.
